Details

The Tudor Prince Date “Tiger” Chronograph Ref. 79280 (White Dial) is a late-1990s to early 2000s vintage automatic chronograph that blends classic sports-watch design with robust, reliable mechanics—making it a favorite among Tudor collectors and enthusiasts of vintage tool watches. Part of Tudor’s Prince Date chronograph family and often referred to as a “Tiger” model due to Tudor’s historical partnership with golfer Tiger Woods in the late ’90s, the 79280 typically features a 40 mm stainless-steel Oyster case with a fixed tachymeter bezel, screw-down crown and pushers, and a stainless-steel bracelet. The crisp white (or silver) dial is laid out with three contrasting chronograph sub-dials for running seconds, 30-minute and 12-hour counters, plus a date window at 3 o’clock under Tudor’s signature Cyclops magnifier.

Under the hood, the watch is powered by the automatic ETA/Valjoux 7750-based movement, a workhorse chronograph calibre known for reliability, ease of service, and solid performance with a roughly 42-hour power reserve. The combination of the tachymeter scale, chronograph registers, and robust construction gives the 79280 genuine sports-tool functionality, while its vintage-era proportions and aesthetic tie it to Tudor’s broader heritage of rugged yet stylish watches. Water resistance is typically rated around 100 m, and the solid caseback and sapphire crystal keep it durable for everyday use—even if most owners today treat it as a collectible or weekend chronograph rather than a daily beat-watch.

Brand History

Tudor was established in 1926 by Hans Wilsdorf, the founder of Rolex, with a vision to create watches that offered the same reliability and precision as Rolex, but at a more accessible price point. Built with robust Swiss movements and housed in Rolex-quality cases, Tudor quickly earned a reputation for producing tool watches trusted by military units and professional divers around the world. In the 1950s and ‘60s, Tudor introduced iconic models like the Oyster Prince Submariner, worn by the French Navy, and carved out a legacy as a maker of rugged, no-nonsense timepieces built to perform under extreme conditions.

In recent years, Tudor has reemerged as one of the most exciting names in modern watchmaking. Collections like the Black Bay, Pelagos, and Ranger pay homage to the brand’s vintage roots while incorporating in-house calibers and contemporary design updates. The Black Bay Fifty-Eight, in particular, has become a collector favorite for its perfect blend of vintage proportions and modern engineering. With a design language all its own and a renewed focus on manufacturing independence, Tudor has established itself as far more than Rolex’s younger sibling—it’s a brand that balances heritage, innovation, and value with serious horological credibility.
