Sinn 103 Classic 12 Reverse Panda Chronograph 103.181
The modern Sinn 103 was never really on my radar, as I am a big fan of the Sinn 142 (the older model, with the Lémania 5100 movement inside) and the current Sinn 140. The standard production Sinn 103 is a cool watch to me, even though the typical Valjoux 7750 dial lay-out (subdials at 12, 9, and 6 o’clock) isn’t my favorite. The Sinn 103 Classic 12 changes things, with the same layout of the subdials as the first Sinn 103 models from the 1960s, which I much prefer. Below, an image of a Sinn 103(B) from the 1960s with the “tri-compax” layout.
The Sinn 103 Classic 12 has a black electroplated dial with a sunburst finish. The dial has applied hour markers and hands filled with Super-LumiNova and sub-dials are surrounded by metal rims. As you can see in the picture, the sub-dials have a classic circular motif. At 4:30, you will find the date window. A black date wheel with white printing keeps things toned down and subtle. Perhaps not giving the best contrast, but it’s visually more pleasing than a white disc with black printing, which may somewhat imbalance the dial. The reverse panda dial on the Sinn 103 Classic 12 looks great.
It is part of Sinn’s Ar-Dehumidifying Technology. This clever Sinn innovation solves the problem of aging oil due to moisture in the air inside the watch. Sinn uses a drying capsule, special seals, and protective gas inside the case to slow down this aging process from happening. It’s also a measure to prevent the crystal from fogging due to a sudden extreme change in temperature. The drying capsule is filled with copper sulfate and absorbs the moisture from the air inside the Sinn 103 Classic 12 watch. The indicator shows when it is time to have this titanium drying capsule replaced. The colors go from pale blue to dark blue for a fully saturated capsule.

History of Sinn Watches
Founded in 1961 by Helmut Sinn, a former World War II pilot and blind flight instructor, Sinn Watch Company quickly gained recognition for its aviation-inspired timepieces. Specializing in navigation clocks and pilot chronographs, Sinn's reputation for precision and durability was cemented during the 1980s and 1990s when their watches accompanied German astronauts on several space missions. These accomplishments demonstrated the brand's commitment to creating reliable timepieces capable of withstanding extreme conditions.
A new era began in 1994 when certified engineer Lothar Schmidt acquired the company, introducing significant technological advancements. Under Schmidt's leadership, Sinn pioneered innovations such as Ar-Dehumidifying Technology, DIAPAL lubrication-free escapements, and TEGIMENT hardened steel cases. Today, Sinn remains at the forefront of horological innovation, producing high-quality timepieces that blend traditional craftsmanship with cutting-edge technology. The brand's dedication to excellence and continuous improvement ensures its lasting legacy in the world of high-end watchmaking.
