Details

The Nivada Grenchen Chronosport Mecaquartz Salmon Ref. 77002Q45 is a limited-production chronograph that channels the bold racing and sports-watch aesthetic of the 1970s while keeping the proportions remarkably wearable. Its 38mm stainless steel case surrounds a finely textured matte black dial, highlighted by three contrasting salmon-colored subdials with distinctive Art Deco-inspired typography. The combination creates a warm reverse-panda appearance with considerably more character than a traditional black-and-white chronograph. A black aluminum bidirectional rotating bezel, internal tachymeter scale, double-domed sapphire crystal, date at 3 o’clock, and 200 meters of water resistance give the Chronosport genuine tool-watch capability, while its compact case and vintage styling stay faithful to the spirit of Nivada Grenchen’s historic sporting chronographs. The Salmon edition was offered only during a limited preorder window, adding an extra layer of collectibility to this particular configuration.

Inside is the Seiko Instruments VK67 Meca-Quartz chronograph movement, combining quartz-regulated timekeeping with a mechanically actuated chronograph system. The result provides quartz accuracy and an approximately three-year battery life while delivering the crisp reset and sweeping central chronograph seconds associated with a traditional mechanical stopwatch. The layout includes central chronograph seconds, 30-minute and 12-hour counters, small seconds, and a date display, making the 77002Q45 surprisingly functional for its compact size. Paired with its stainless steel bracelet, textured black-and-salmon dial, 200-meter water resistance, and unusual hybrid movement, the Chronosport Mecaquartz Salmon offers much of the visual personality of a vintage mechanical chronograph in a more accessible and exceptionally easy-to-own package.

Brand History

Nivada Grenchen, established in 1926 in Grenchen, Switzerland, quickly became renowned for its rugged tool watches that pushed the boundaries of horological innovation. The brand solidified its reputation with the introduction of the Antarctic in 1950, the first waterproof automatic watch. This timepiece gained fame when it accompanied members of the U.S. Navy's Operation Deep Freeze I during their South Pole expedition from 1955 to 1956.

In 1961, Nivada Grenchen launched the Chronomaster, a versatile waterproof chronograph designed for aviators, divers, and sports enthusiasts. The company continued its innovative streak with the release of the Depthomatic in 1964, the first diver's watch featuring a depth indicator, followed by the Depthmaster in 1965, capable of withstanding pressures up to 1,000 meters.

After a period of dormancy, Nivada Grenchen experienced a rebirth in 2018, reintroducing two of its most iconic models—the Chronomaster Aviator Sea Diver and the Antarctic—at the forefront of its revival. The relaunch paved the way for the brand’s enduring appeal among modern watch enthusiasts while honoring its storied heritage.
