Ming 37.05 Series 2 Moonphase

Regular price $5,000 Unit price  per

Following on from our first moonphase in 2021, we bring a second generation with a new and dynamic interpretation of the night sky in the 37.05 Series 2.

Moving changes

Our new moonphase trades the former gradient blue-black textured dial for an anthracite one with sunray brushing and star-shaped holes: the holes are important as they are really luminous stars that appear and disappear with the changing phases of the moon. This is achieved by having the large rotating moon disk do double duty for both moon and dynamic stellar backdrop.

We retained the sapphire upper dial for the hour indices, moon mask, inversion, and now it also holds luminous HyCeram stars on its upper and lower surfaces to add further visual depth to the piece. Playing on the idea of lunar romance the accents of the moon, date font and stars are unified in a warm hue.

An interactive choice

A moonphase is an old complication, and paying tribute to that and the popularity of our new movement finishing, we have left the 37.05 Series 2 as a hand wind piece. Once again, offering owners more opportunities to interact with their watch. The watch is powered by the Sellita SW288-1 which is heavily reworked and finished in a style now familiar to our supporters since its debut in the 27.01 Ultra Thin. Bridges are skeletonized, matte-blasted and anthracite coated, with a contrasting portion on the main train bridge in circular-brushed rhodium and the movement offers 40 hours of power reserve.

Refinement of the next generation

The 37.05 Series 2 is now the fifth watch of the 37-series. The case design is complex to machine because of its multiple compound curves – such as the line from case side to lug tip, and is showcased with presence and sparkle using an alternating polished-brushed finish. It also wears larger on the wrist thanks to a significantly wider dial opening than previous cases. Wearability and comfort for a wide variety of wrist sizes is maintained with the same 38mm maximum diameter and 20mm lug width, however. In short: it looks bigger than a 17-series, but is just as comfortably wearable.

We continue our partnerships with Manufacture Schwarz-Etienne for construction, production and assembly; JeanRousseau Paris for the accompanying goat leather strap, and Studio Koji Sato for the pouches.

History of Ming Watches

Horologer MING, founded in 2017 by photographer and watch enthusiast Ming Thein, has quickly become a notable player in the watch industry. Born from Thein's passion for horology and frustration with the industry's increasing prices and pretentiousness, MING was created alongside a group of like-minded enthusiasts. The brand's philosophy centers on delivering mechanical watches with distinctive designs, exceptional value, and integrity across all price points. MING's approach is characterized by its reductive design language, featuring strong symmetry, flared lugs, and visual layering that creates dynamic appearances under different lighting conditions.

Despite its young age, MING has garnered significant acclaim, including a GPHG shortlisting for its 19.01 model in 2018. The brand operates through collaborations with various partners, allowing it to produce a range of watches from entry-level to high-end pieces. MING's unique position in the market stems from its commitment to transparency, limited production runs, and a customer-centric approach. As the brand continues to evolve, it faces challenges due to its Malaysian base and lack of a local watchmaking ecosystem. However, MING remains focused on innovation, exploring new complications and designs while staying true to its founding principles of value, integrity, and coherent design.
