Details

The IWC Pilot’s Watch Big Pilot Ref. IW501001 is a modern interpretation of one of IWC’s most iconic aviation watches, designed to channel the spirit and functionality of classic cockpit instruments while offering modern mechanical excellence. At its core is a large 46.2 mm brushed stainless-steel case paired with a bold black dial featuring high-contrast white Arabic numerals and luminous hands, ensuring exceptional legibility—an essential attribute of traditional pilot’s watches. The oversized conical screw-down crown is a functional nod to early aviation timepieces, originally designed so pilots could operate the watch while wearing gloves, and it gives the watch a purposeful, tool-watch aesthetic. A black calfskin leather strap completes the look with classic aviation flair.

Under the hood, the IW501001 is powered by IWC’s in-house Calibre 52110 automatic movement with the Pellaton winding system, featuring ceramic components and two barrels that deliver an impressive ~7-day (168 hour) power reserve. A power-reserve indicator at 3 o’clock keeps you informed of how much energy remains, while the date display at 6 o’clock adds everyday practicality. The watch also incorporates a soft-iron inner case to enhance magnetic resistance and a convex sapphire crystal with anti-reflective coating, balancing heritage pilot-watch cues with modern performance and durability. Water resistance is 60 m.

Brand History

The International Watch Company (IWC) has a rich history dating back to 1868 when American watchmaker Florentine Ariosto Jones founded the company in Schaffhausen, Switzerland. Jones aimed to combine advanced American manufacturing techniques with the skilled craftsmanship of Swiss watchmakers. Despite initial challenges, IWC quickly gained a reputation for producing high-quality pocket watches and, later, wristwatches.

Throughout the 20th century, IWC was a force of innovation and expand its repertoire accordingly. In the 1930s, they introduced their first pilot's watches, which would become an enduring part of their identity. During World War II, IWC produced these watches for both civilian and military use. The post-war period saw the introduction of iconic collections like the Ingenieur in 1955 and the Aquatimer in 1967. In the 1970s, IWC collaborated with Ferdinand A. Porsche to create the first watch with a built-in compass. The company's commitment to technical innovation and classic design has persisted into the 21st century, with IWC remaining a respected name in luxury watchmaking.
