The IWC Pilot’s Chronograph “Flieger” Ref. IW370603, also known as the 3706-03, is one of the defining IWC pilot’s watches of the brand’s late-1990s and early-2000s era. Its 39mm stainless steel case features a matte black instrument-style dial with highly legible white Arabic numerals, luminous hands and markers, and the classic pilot’s triangle at 12 o’clock. The chronograph is arranged in the traditional vertical layout, with a 30-minute counter at 12, 12-hour counter at 6, and running seconds at 9, while separate day and date windows sit at 3 o’clock. A sapphire crystal, screw-down crown, 60 meters of water resistance, and an inner soft-iron structure designed to protect the movement from magnetic fields reinforce the Flieger’s purpose-built aviation character. The “03” variant was originally configured on a leather strap and with an English-language day wheel.

Depending on production year, the Ref. 3706 used several heavily modified Valjoux 7750-based IWC movements, with early watches receiving Calibre 7902 and later examples using Calibre 7922. The later 7922 is a 25-jewel automatic chronograph operating at 28,800 vibrations per hour, retaining the rugged cam-operated architecture and day-date functionality that made the 7750 platform famous while receiving extensive modification and finishing by IWC. Produced during an era when IWC was particularly focused on understated, engineering-driven tool watches, the 3706 has developed a strong following among collectors who appreciate its restrained 39mm dimensions, highly functional dial, anti-magnetic construction, and unmistakably utilitarian design.
