Details

The IWC Pilot’s Watch Chronograph "Le Petit Prince" IW388101 blends the brand’s legendary aviation heritage with one of its most beloved design themes. Housed in a versatile 41mm stainless steel case, this reference features the signature sunburst blue dial inspired by Antoine de Saint-Exupéry’s timeless novella *The Little Prince*. Large Arabic numerals, luminous hands, and a clean tri-compax chronograph layout ensure exceptional legibility, while the classic pilot’s aesthetic remains unmistakably IWC. The watch is paired with a blue calfskin leather strap, creating a refined yet sporty look that transitions effortlessly from everyday wear to more formal occasions.

Powering the IW388101 is IWC’s in-house Caliber 69385, a self-winding column-wheel chronograph movement designed for precision, durability, and everyday reliability. The movement offers a 46-hour power reserve and can be admired through the sapphire exhibition caseback, showcasing traditional finishing and the efficient bi-directional winding system. Alongside the chronograph, the watch features practical day and date displays, 100 meters of water resistance, and a soft-iron-inspired pilot watch design that stays true to IWC’s long history of manufacturing instrument watches for aviators.

What makes the IW388101 especially desirable is its connection to IWC’s celebrated "Le Petit Prince" collection. While earlier limited editions featured the iconic blue dial, this reference brings that sought-after aesthetic to a highly wearable 41mm platform, making it one of the most versatile Pilot’s Watches in the brand’s lineup. The combination of timeless aviation styling, an in-house column-wheel chronograph movement, and the rich blue dial has made the IW388101 a favorite among collectors who appreciate understated luxury with genuine horological substance. For enthusiasts seeking a modern pilot’s chronograph that balances heritage, everyday practicality, and enduring design, the IWC Pilot’s Watch Chronograph "Le Petit Prince" stands as one of the finest contemporary offerings from Schaffhausen.

Brand History

The International Watch Company (IWC) has a rich history dating back to 1868 when American watchmaker Florentine Ariosto Jones founded the company in Schaffhausen, Switzerland. Jones aimed to combine advanced American manufacturing techniques with the skilled craftsmanship of Swiss watchmakers. Despite initial challenges, IWC quickly gained a reputation for producing high-quality pocket watches and, later, wristwatches.

Throughout the 20th century, IWC was a force of innovation and expand its repertoire accordingly. In the 1930s, they introduced their first pilot's watches, which would become an enduring part of their identity. During World War II, IWC produced these watches for both civilian and military use. The post-war period saw the introduction of iconic collections like the Ingenieur in 1955 and the Aquatimer in 1967. In the 1970s, IWC collaborated with Ferdinand A. Porsche to create the first watch with a built-in compass. The company's commitment to technical innovation and classic design has persisted into the 21st century, with IWC remaining a respected name in luxury watchmaking.
