Details

The IWC GST Aquatimer 2000 Ref. IW353601 is a standout example of IWC Schaffhausen’s bold 1990s dive-watch engineering, produced as part of the GST (Gold/Steel/Titanium) sports collection that revisited and expanded the brand’s Aquatimer lineage. Introduced around 1998–2000, the Aquatimer 2000 was designed as a no-nonsense tool watch with professional-grade capabilities—notably an incredible 2,000 m (200 bar) water resistance rating, putting it in serious diver territory well beyond most luxury dive watches of its era. It’s built in a robust 42 mm case (approx. 14.5 mm thick), with a unidirectional rotating bezel and a screw-down crown, maintaining both practicality and a strong visual identity rooted in purpose-driven design.

While vintage and pre-owned examples appear most commonly in titanium (as indicated in the majority of listings), there were also stainless steel variants of the Ref. 3536-002 within the GST Aquatimer 2000 range that share the same core design ethos: a tool-first aesthetic with integrated bracelet geometry and clear diver utility. The dial is typically matte black with luminous indices and hands for high legibility under water, along with a date display at 3 o’clock. Powering the watch is a reliable automatic movement based on the ETA 2892-A2 (IWC Cal. 37524), offering dependable daily performance and conventional time/date functionality. Integrated bracelet options and optional straps underscore the watch’s sporty versatility, making the GST Aquatimer 2000 a unique expression of IWC’s dive-watch heritage.

Brand History

The International Watch Company (IWC) has a rich history dating back to 1868 when American watchmaker Florentine Ariosto Jones founded the company in Schaffhausen, Switzerland. Jones aimed to combine advanced American manufacturing techniques with the skilled craftsmanship of Swiss watchmakers. Despite initial challenges, IWC quickly gained a reputation for producing high-quality pocket watches and, later, wristwatches.

Throughout the 20th century, IWC was a force of innovation and expand its repertoire accordingly. In the 1930s, they introduced their first pilot's watches, which would become an enduring part of their identity. During World War II, IWC produced these watches for both civilian and military use. The post-war period saw the introduction of iconic collections like the Ingenieur in 1955 and the Aquatimer in 1967. In the 1970s, IWC collaborated with Ferdinand A. Porsche to create the first watch with a built-in compass. The company's commitment to technical innovation and classic design has persisted into the 21st century, with IWC remaining a respected name in luxury watchmaking.
