Details

The Grand Seiko Spring Drive GMT “Winter Tōji” Ref. SBGE269 is a beautiful expression of Grand Seiko's philosophy of capturing the natural beauty of Japan through exceptional watchmaking. Introduced in 2021 as part of the brand's Twenty-Four Seasons collection, the SBGE269 draws inspiration from Tōji, the Japanese winter solstice, when the days are shortest and the landscape is blanketed in snow. Its striking textured white dial recreates the appearance of freshly fallen snow across the Shinshu region of Japan, while the contrasting gold-tone GMT hand symbolizes the final rays of the setting winter sun. The 40.2mm stainless steel case measures 48.5mm lug-to-lug and 14mm thick, featuring Grand Seiko's signature Zaratsu polishing, sharply defined case edges, and a combination of polished and brushed surfaces. A box-shaped sapphire crystal with internal anti-reflective treatment, applied faceted hour markers, date window at 3 o'clock, and power-reserve indicator between 7 and 8 o'clock complete the distinctive dial. A sapphire exhibition caseback, 100 meters of water resistance, and matching stainless steel bracelet with a three-fold clasp make the SBGE269 equally suitable for everyday wear and travel.

Inside is Grand Seiko's in-house Spring Drive Calibre 9R66, a sophisticated automatic GMT movement manufactured at the Shinshu Watch Studio in Nagano, Japan. Featuring 30 jewels and an impressive 72-hour power reserve, the movement combines the traditional mechanical energy of a mainspring with Grand Seiko's proprietary Tri-synchro Regulator, achieving exceptional accuracy of approximately ±1 second per day or ±15 seconds per month. Its most captivating characteristic is the perfectly smooth, continuous sweep of the seconds hand, which glides silently across the textured dial without the conventional ticking motion of a mechanical escapement. The Calibre 9R66 also offers true traveler's GMT functionality, allowing the local hour hand to be adjusted independently in one-hour increments while maintaining accurate timekeeping and automatically correcting the date when crossing midnight. The SBGE269 continues Grand Seiko's tradition of drawing inspiration from the landscapes surrounding its manufacturing facilities, transforming the quiet beauty of a Japanese winter into a highly refined mechanical timepiece. With its intricate snow-inspired dial, warm golden GMT accents, beautifully finished stainless steel case, and technologically remarkable Spring Drive movement, the Winter Tōji represents a compelling combination of Japanese artistry, precision engineering, and practical dual-time functionality.

Brand History

Grand Seiko emerged in 1960 as a high-end watch line from Seiko, aiming to challenge Swiss dominance in luxury watchmaking. The brand quickly established itself with Japan's first chronometer-grade watch and later gained renown for its innovative Spring Drive technology, which combines the best of automatic and quartz movements. In 2017, Grand Seiko became an independent entity, solidifying its position in the luxury watch market.

The brand's design philosophy, known as the "Grammar of Design," was established in 1967 with the Grand Seiko 44GS. This aesthetic approach emphasizes legibility, refined appearances, and distinctive features like multi-faceted markers and hands, a half-recessed crown, and the meticulous Zaratsu polishing technique. Grand Seiko continues to push boundaries in watchmaking, as evidenced by recent innovations like the "Kodo Constant-Force Tourbillon," while maintaining its commitment to precision engineering and unique design language.
