Details

The Cartier Santos Chronograph XL ADLC Ref. WSSA0017 is a modern, sportier evolution of one of the most historically important watch designs ever created—the Santos, originally introduced in 1904 as one of the first wristwatches. This chronograph version brings that heritage into a contemporary context with a 43.3 mm stainless steel case paired with a matte black ADLC (Amorphous Diamond-Like Carbon) bezel, giving it a stealthy, high-contrast look while maintaining Cartier’s signature exposed screw aesthetic.

The silver opaline dial is unmistakably Cartier, featuring bold black Roman numerals, sword-shaped hands, and a three-register chronograph layout. A subtle date window at 6 o’clock keeps the symmetry clean, while the combination of polished and brushed surfaces adds depth and refinement. The watch also includes Cartier’s QuickSwitch system, allowing easy strap changes between the rubber strap and alligator leather strap, making it highly versatile between sporty and dressy settings.

Inside, the watch is powered by the Cartier Calibre 1904-CH MC, an in-house automatic chronograph movement designed for reliability and smooth operation. It offers around 48 hours of power reserve and drives the chronograph functions alongside standard timekeeping. The watch is protected by a sapphire crystal and offers 100 m water resistance, making it suitable for everyday wear despite its refined aesthetic.

Brand History

Cartier, founded in Paris in 1847 by Louis-François Cartier, began as a jewelry workshop that quickly gained recognition among French aristocracy. Under the leadership of Alfred Cartier, the company expanded into watchmaking, with a pivotal moment occurring in 1904 when Louis Cartier created the Santos Dumont, the world's first modern men's wristwatch, for aviation pioneer Alberto Santos-Dumont.

Throughout the 20th century, Cartier continued to innovate in watch design, introducing iconic timepieces like the Tank in 1918, inspired by the Renault FT-17 tank. The company's watches became known for blending functionality with artistic elements, incorporating Art Deco influences and precious materials. Today, as part of the Richemont Group, Cartier remains a leader in luxury watchmaking, continuing to produce exquisite timepieces that combine tradition with contemporary design, from the classic Tank to the modern Pasha.
