Details

The Cartier Santos 100 Chronograph Ref. 2740 is a bold interpretation of the historic Santos design, created during the mid-2000s when Cartier expanded the collection with larger, sportier proportions. Its substantial stainless steel case measures approximately 41mm wide and 55mm long, retaining the unmistakable square Santos architecture with exposed bezel screws, rounded corners, and a cabochon-set crown. The silvered dial features oversized black Roman numerals, Cartier’s signature sword-shaped hands, and three recessed chronograph registers arranged at 3, 6, and 9 o’clock, along with a date window positioned between 4 and 5. A sapphire crystal and approximately 100 meters of water resistance add everyday durability, while the leather strap and Cartier folding clasp preserve the balance between sportiness and the refined character associated with the Santos collection.

Inside is Cartier’s automatic Calibre 8630 MC, a 27-jewel chronograph movement based on the proven ETA/Valjoux 7753 architecture. Operating at 28,800 vibrations per hour, the movement provides approximately 48 hours of power reserve and uses a traditional cam-actuated chronograph mechanism, with a 30-minute counter at 3 o’clock, 12-hour counter at 6, and running seconds at 9. The Santos 100 collection itself was introduced to commemorate the 100th anniversary of Louis Cartier’s 1904 watch for pioneering aviator Alberto Santos-Dumont, and the Ref. 2740 translated that historic design into one of the largest and most assertive Santos watches of its era. Now discontinued, the Santos 100 Chronograph has developed a strong neo-vintage appeal, combining unmistakable Cartier design language with oversized early-2000s proportions and the practicality of a robust automatic chronograph movement.

Brand History

Cartier, founded in Paris in 1847 by Louis-François Cartier, began as a jewelry workshop that quickly gained recognition among French aristocracy. Under the leadership of Alfred Cartier, the company expanded into watchmaking, with a pivotal moment occurring in 1904 when Louis Cartier created the Santos Dumont, the world's first modern men's wristwatch, for aviation pioneer Alberto Santos-Dumont.

Throughout the 20th century, Cartier continued to innovate in watch design, introducing iconic timepieces like the Tank in 1918, inspired by the Renault FT-17 tank. The company's watches became known for blending functionality with artistic elements, incorporating Art Deco influences and precious materials. Today, as part of the Richemont Group, Cartier remains a leader in luxury watchmaking, continuing to produce exquisite timepieces that combine tradition with contemporary design, from the classic Tank to the modern Pasha.
