Details

The 1999 Rolex Explorer II Ref. 16570 “Polar” is a particularly desirable example of the classic five-digit Explorer II, distinguished by its transitional “SWISS Only” dial. Produced during a brief period between 1998 and 1999, these dials feature only the word “SWISS” beneath the 6 o’clock marker, representing Rolex’s transition from radioactive tritium to the newer, non-radioactive LumiNova luminous material. This short-lived configuration preceded the familiar “SWISS MADE” dials that would become standard on later examples, making the SWISS Only variation especially interesting to collectors of transitional Rolex references. The watch features a classic 40mm stainless steel Oyster case, fixed 24-hour engraved bezel, and striking white Polar dial with contrasting black-outlined hour markers and hands. Its vibrant red GMT hand provides a distinctive splash of color, while a scratch-resistant sapphire crystal with Cyclops date magnification, screw-down Twinlock crown, and 100 meters of water resistance reinforce its professional tool-watch heritage. The stainless steel Oyster bracelet completes the understated and highly recognizable design.

Inside is Rolex’s automatic Calibre 3185, a 31-jewel COSC-certified chronometer movement operating at 28,800 vibrations per hour and delivering approximately 48 hours of power reserve. The movement features independently adjustable local-hour functionality, allowing the wearer to change time zones without interrupting the watch’s timekeeping, while the red 24-hour hand continues to display home time or a day/night indication. The Explorer II collection was originally introduced in 1971 with Ref. 1655, designed for cave explorers, mountaineers, and professionals working in environments where distinguishing day from night could be difficult. Introduced in 1989, the 16570 refined that original concept with a slimmer case, improved dial legibility, and modern movement technology while retaining the rugged simplicity of the Explorer II. This particular 1999 example is especially appealing because of its short-lived SWISS Only dial, which captures a fascinating transitional moment in Rolex production. With its classic 40mm proportions, crisp white Polar dial, distinctive red GMT hand, reliable Calibre 3185, and uncommon LumiNova dial configuration, the 16570 represents one of the most compelling neo-vintage Explorer II variations for collectors seeking both historical significance and everyday versatility.
