Details

The 1971 Zenith El Primero A3817 is one of the rarest and most historically significant references from the earliest years of Zenith's revolutionary automatic chronograph movement. Produced for just a single year in 1971, with only 1,000 examples manufactured, the A3817 combined two of Zenith's most iconic designs: the angular tonneau-shaped stainless steel case of the original A384 and the striking tri-color dial made famous by the A386. Measuring approximately 37mm in diameter, the case features sharply defined facets, pump-style chronograph pushers, and a domed acrylic crystal that reinforces its unmistakable 1970s character. The silver-white dial features overlapping chronograph registers in contrasting shades of blue, light grey, and charcoal, complemented by a vivid red central chronograph hand. Particularly distinctive is the outer tachymeter and pulsometer scale, accompanied by the unusual “shark tooth” minute track that has become a defining characteristic of the reference. With its compact dimensions, unmistakable dial design, and extremely limited original production, the A3817 is among the most desirable early El Primero chronographs.

Inside is Zenith's legendary Calibre 3019 PHC, one of the world's first automatic chronograph movements, introduced in 1969 after years of intensive development. The movement was groundbreaking for its time, combining automatic winding, an integrated column-wheel chronograph mechanism, and an exceptionally high frequency of 36,000 vibrations per hour, or 5 Hz. This allowed the El Primero to measure elapsed time to one-tenth of a second, an extraordinary achievement when most contemporary mechanical chronographs operated at considerably lower frequencies. The 31-jewel movement provides approximately 50 hours of power reserve and powers central chronograph seconds, a 30-minute counter, 12-hour counter, running seconds, and an instantaneous date display positioned between 4 and 5 o'clock. The original El Primero architecture became one of the most celebrated chronograph movements in Swiss watchmaking history, surviving the quartz crisis and eventually establishing itself as a benchmark for high-frequency mechanical chronographs. The A3817 is particularly important because it represents a brief moment when Zenith combined the technical innovation of the original El Primero with two of its most recognizable early design languages.

What makes this particular 1971 A3817 especially remarkable is its exceptional accompanying collection of original accessories. The watch is offered with its box and papers, along with its original Zenith strap and buckle, a combination that is increasingly difficult to find more than five decades after production. Surviving examples of the A3817 are already uncommon due to the original production of just 1,000 pieces, but examples retaining their period accessories and documentation are considerably more elusive. Original presentation materials provide an important connection to the watch's history, preserving details of how these remarkable chronographs were originally delivered and enjoyed during the early 1970s. The A3817's significance was further recognized when Zenith revived the design in 2021, introducing a modern Chronomaster Revival inspired directly by the 1971 original. With its iconic tri-color dial, distinctive angular case, historically important Calibre 3019 PHC, extremely limited production, and accompanying box, papers, original strap, and buckle, this 1971 Zenith El Primero A3817 represents an exceptional example of one of the most collectible chronographs from the golden age of mechanical watchmaking.

Brand History

Zenith was founded in 1865 by Georges Favre-Jacot in Le Locle, Switzerland, and is celebrated as one of the first watch manufactures to fully integrate every aspect of production under one roof. This groundbreaking approach laid the foundation for over a century of innovation and precision. Zenith’s most iconic achievement came in 1969 with the launch of the El Primero, one of the world’s first automatic chronograph movements—and still one of the most accurate, beating at an impressive 36,000 vibrations per hour. This movement would go on to power legendary models and even find its way into watches by other major Swiss brands.

Zenith’s current lineup honors its legacy while embracing modernity. The Chronomaster series continues to showcase the high-frequency prowess of the El Primero, offering split-second accuracy and open-heart dial designs. The Defy collection pushes the brand into futuristic territory with skeletonized dials, cutting-edge materials, and innovative escapements. Meanwhile, the Pilot line draws on Zenith’s history of aviation timepieces, featuring oversized crowns and vintage-inspired aesthetics. Known for its relentless pursuit of precision and its role in shaping the future of Swiss watchmaking, Zenith remains popular amongst collectors who value performance, heritage, and technical artistry in equal measure.
