Details

The 1966 Tudor Submariner Ref. 7928 is one of the most historically significant vintage dive watches ever produced, representing the golden era of Tudor's tool-watch heritage. Introduced in 1959 as the brand's first Submariner with crown guards, the 7928 remained in production for nearly a decade and evolved through numerous dial, bezel, and case variations that have become a fascination for collectors today.

Powering the Ref. 7928 is the reliable Tudor Caliber 390 automatic movement, a proven Swiss movement celebrated for its durability and dependability during an era when Tudor supplied dive watches to military organizations around the world. Rated to 200 meters of water resistance, the 7928 was built as a true professional tool watch and laid the foundation for Tudor's long-standing reputation in military and commercial diving. Today, original examples with matching tritium lume, correct bezel inserts, and untouched dials are among the most sought-after vintage Tudor references, with the rare 1966 glossy dial variants commanding particular attention from collectors. Combining Rolex-built case construction, Tudor's own distinctive design language, and genuine historical significance, the 1966 Tudor Submariner 7928 stands as one of the finest and most collectible vintage dive watches ever produced.

Brand History

Tudor was established in 1926 by Hans Wilsdorf, the founder of Rolex, with a vision to create watches that offered the same reliability and precision as Rolex, but at a more accessible price point. Built with robust Swiss movements and housed in Rolex-quality cases, Tudor quickly earned a reputation for producing tool watches trusted by military units and professional divers around the world. In the 1950s and ‘60s, Tudor introduced iconic models like the Oyster Prince Submariner, worn by the French Navy, and carved out a legacy as a maker of rugged, no-nonsense timepieces built to perform under extreme conditions.

In recent years, Tudor has reemerged as one of the most exciting names in modern watchmaking. Collections like the Black Bay, Pelagos, and Ranger pay homage to the brand’s vintage roots while incorporating in-house calibers and contemporary design updates. The Black Bay Fifty-Eight, in particular, has become a collector favorite for its perfect blend of vintage proportions and modern engineering. With a design language all its own and a renewed focus on manufacturing independence, Tudor has established itself as far more than Rolex’s younger sibling—it’s a brand that balances heritage, innovation, and value with serious horological credibility.
