The 1964 Omega Speedmaster Ref. 105.002-62 is an exceptionally desirable early Speedmaster from the brief transitional period between the straight-lug CK2998 and the later 105.003 “Ed White.” Introduced in 1962, the 105.002 was essentially the new-reference-number continuation of the CK2998 and retained the classic 39.7mm symmetrical stainless steel case with straight lugs, pump pushers, Hesalite crystal, and no crown guards. This example is particularly attractive for its beautifully preserved original dial and baton-style hands, a configuration associated with later 105.002 production as Omega transitioned away from the Alpha hands seen on earlier examples. The stepped black dial retains the applied Omega logo and long luminous hour plots, while the original black aluminum tachymeter bezel has naturally aged to a striking blue hue. That color shift is the result of decades of fading and oxidation, giving the watch a unique appearance that cannot be replicated by a modern replacement bezel.
Inside is Omega’s legendary manually wound Calibre 321, the 17-jewel column-wheel chronograph movement operating at 18,000 vibrations per hour that would later become inseparably linked with NASA and the Apollo program. The 105.002 is especially interesting to collectors because of its short production period and its position at a pivotal point in Speedmaster development: it preserves the elegant straight-lug case and proportions of the CK2998 while beginning the transition toward the baton-hand configuration subsequently associated with the 105.003. Examples are documented as having been delivered into 1964 despite the “-62” reference designation. With its outstanding dial and hands, naturally blue-faded period bezel, Calibre 321 movement, and uncommon transitional configuration, this 105.002-62 captures the Speedmaster immediately before its transformation from a motorsport chronograph into the watch that would become synonymous with human spaceflight.
