Zenith Watch History

At Belmont Watches, we’re drawn to brands that changed the course of horological history, and Zenith is one of the most important. Known for its high-frequency chronograph movements and unwavering commitment to in-house innovation, Zenith helped shape the modern sports watch with the legendary El Primero.

Founded in 1865 by Georges Favre-Jacot in Le Locle, Switzerland, Zenith was one of the first manufacturers to fully integrate all watchmaking disciplines under one roof. That decision would prove to be pivotal in allowing Zenith to build accurate, reliable, and groundbreaking movements over the next century.

Early History: Innovation from the Start

Georges Favre-Jacot believed that unifying watchmakers, parts producers, and finishers in a single manufacture would improve precision and efficiency. This early version of vertical integration helped Zenith earn awards for chronometric accuracy as early as the 1900s.

By the mid-20th century, Zenith had built a reputation for precise dress watches and chronometers, a prelude to what would come next.

The El Primero: A Chronograph Milestone

In 1969, Zenith introduced the El Primero, the world’s first fully integrated automatic chronograph movement and the first high-frequency chronograph beating at 36,000 vibrations per hour (vph). This movement allowed for greater timing precision and a smoother sweep of the chronograph seconds hand.

What made El Primero different:

  • True automatic chronograph with column wheel and horizontal clutch

  • High beat 5Hz frequency for 1/10th second precision

  • Robust and beautifully finished in-house design

Though the Quartz Crisis forced Zenith to halt production temporarily, watchmaker Charles Vermot famously hid the El Primero tooling in the attic of the factory, preserving it for the brand’s eventual mechanical comeback.

Survival and Revival

By the 1980s, the mechanical watch renaissance was underway. Zenith’s El Primero became a symbol of resilience and excellence. It was even chosen by Rolex to power early Daytona automatic models before Rolex developed its own in-house movement.

Today, the El Primero remains the centerpiece of Zenith’s offerings, powering chronographs in the Chronomaster and Defy collections.

Modern Zenith: Pushing the Limits

Zenith continues to innovate with models like:

  • Chronomaster Sport – A modern sports chronograph with El Primero precision and ceramic bezel styling

  • Chronomaster Original – A faithful revival of the 1969 A386 with tri-color subdials

  • Defy Skyline – Featuring a unique 1/10th second subdial and angular, modern case

  • Defy Extreme – Ultra-technical chronographs with openworked dials and 1/100th second measurement

Zenith also explores new materials like titanium and carbon while maintaining superb finishing and mechanical artistry.
