Zenith Watch History: El Primero, Defy, and Swiss High-Beat Excellence

Zenith: The Beat of Innovation Since 1865

At Belmont Watches, we love brands that push the limits of what a watch can do. Zenith has been doing that for over 150 years. Best known for creating the first integrated high-frequency automatic chronograph movement, Zenith combines precision engineering with daring design.

Whether you are drawn to the El Primero’s legacy or the modern Defy’s futuristic lines, Zenith offers a true collector’s experience rooted in horological innovation.

Born in Le Locle: A Tradition of Excellence

Founded in 1865 by Georges Favre-Jacot, Zenith was one of the first watchmakers to unite all stages of production under one roof. This approach allowed for unmatched quality control and innovation.

By the early 20th century, Zenith was winning observatory prizes for accuracy and had become a leading producer of chronometers and fine watch movements.

El Primero: The First of Its Kind

In 1969, Zenith released the El Primero, the world’s first high-frequency automatic chronograph. Beating at 36,000 vibrations per hour, it allowed for 1/10th second accuracy and smoother chronograph operation. It was also the first fully integrated automatic chronograph movement.

This movement powered not only Zenith’s own chronographs but also those of brands like Rolex (in early Daytonas) and Movado. The El Primero has been in continuous production ever since.

Defy: Bold Design and Cutting-Edge Tech

The Zenith Defy line showcases the brand’s modern vision. These watches often use skeletonized dials, titanium cases, and futuristic materials to push design boundaries.

The Defy Skyline, Defy Classic, and Defy Extreme collections show off the brand’s ability to merge traditional craftsmanship with avant-garde styling.
